I am planning on running the cressida this year and I am having a problem trying to figure out what mod class I have to run in.

Here is a list of what is done to it.
2.0 liter Nissan SR20det turboed motor and trans swapped
Cage, race seat and harnesses and stripped interior
Coilovers
91 300zx tt calipers and rotors up front
17x9 rims with 245/45/17 Kumho XS tires
welded diff
No bumpers
Battery mounted in a battery box behind the front passenger seat
here is a picture of it's current state

whats wrong with how it looks?? I have seen cars look worse and I have seen cars run with no bumpers at autox events before. I have even seen cars with wheels that stuck out really far and had to have their fender openings cut out so the tires wouldn't rub. Anyone got a clue as to what class?

motor bumps you to SM. iirc, no bumpers and battery inside passenger compartment bumps you to XP.

And so have I - and I'm not talking about the Lemons cars - there have been various junk-yard dogs that are barely recognizable as cars (and which end is the front).

I just find it surprising that the rules even make that statement (could I protest a car because it's butt ugly?).

Now you make me address your actual question: The engine change is the biggest issue and you have to goto the SM class before it's an option (remember for the SCCA if the rules don't explicitly say that you can then you cannot).

From 16.1 D.1:
"Engine block must be a production unit manufactured and badged
the same as the original standard or optional engine for that model.
... This allows engine blocks manufactured as production units for sale
in other countries such as Japan or Germany."

So that seems to exclude: Nissan motors in a Toyota.

Next is 18.1 B.1 Under Modified:
"Bumpers, grilles, lights, glass, and trim may be removed" :)

And 18.1 D.1
"Engines must be derived from production automobiles available in
the US or elsewhere."

Bingo!

... and finally:
"Modified Class D (DM)
Modified Production and GT cars with engine displacement 2000cc and under ..."

That's also the class that the Lemons car run in so there is some local competition in it. But then there's the occasional Lotus that also run in DM too.

One caveat – I could be wrong :) See if anyone else chimes in.

Good Luck!

thank you. the motor was what I couldn't figure out as far as being legal where. So I'll reg in DM and then it will be up to anyone I run against to argue it not being legal. I only plan to use it in SJR events so I doubt anyone will have an issue.

I agree with Andre, DM is where you need to go.

slower then the car? What does that even mean?

this car should be a solid 1 to 2 seconds faster then my tacoma which is solid rear axle with leaf springs and about 120 hp less. hopefully I get things all sorted out before the first event of the regular season. Going to use the tacoma at tomorrows event.
