I just got a pair of new tires. I blew one on an exposed manhole and couldn't match the tread so I got two new ones. My question is should I have my new tires in the front or in the rear? My car has a tendency to under-steer when pushed so my thought was to put the better rubber up front in hopes of getting more traction on the wheels that steer. However, the tire place insisted on mounting the new tires in the rear stating that it would be better for preventing a spin-out. I typically haven't had problems with spinning out.

Obviously highway driving is different than autox and I use these same tires for everyday driving and don't want to spin-out on the highway. I'm curious to hear your response on where I should put the better rubber. I can always move them from the back to the front on autox days if that's what makes sense.

Thanks for your help. B)

What a bunch of idiots, definitely put them on the front, in an emergency situation you'll be on the brakes and the front tires will be doing most of the work so you definitely want the better ones up there. From the factory all cars are set up to understeer so that regular people won't be "spinning out" all over the highways, so by putting these better tires up front you'll actually be making the car more neutral which is what you want for autocross or just in general as long as you're not completely ham fisted driving way too fast all over the place B)

Thanks, Ahren. That's exactly what I thought. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something.

How's the shoulder by the way?
